This is a transit - a telescope with a built-in level.

If we find a fossil in one sedimentary layer, we can look across a valley and find the same layer, which is where we may find more like it!

This is the kind of map you’re probably not familiar with. We use geologic maps that tell us the kinds and ages of bedrock, because we’re only looking for the layers that formed when dinosaurs were alive.

We found most fossils in hot, dry areas. So, we have to be prepared for camping in the desert for weeks.

When the animals were alive though, these areas looked a lot different! What is now the badlands of South Dakota, was once a swamp.
